Background:
cw: for incest/clonecest, violence, and Yoko Taro being Yoko Taro
Personality:
One has a strong sense of justice that has hardly deteriorated. Despite her young age, she has seen many horrible things, such as lords not just abusing their citizens, but also doing atrocious and violent acts that make death seem like a mercy. This, along with Zero attempting to kill One and her sisters constantly, made One try to make the world a better place and overthrow the evil nobility. Due to being the leader and the strongest Intoner among the five, she believes she has to always be responsible, and tries to take care of her siblings. She takes great pride in being the leader for not just her sisters, but for the entire world, often dedicating her time to countless battles until she exhausts herself. In her Novella, she reveals how, despite her distaste for being paraded around in the middle of a city, she will do so for the sake of appearances, so the people know they are safe and protected. It’s why she puts on a mask of maturity, and only removes it when close to certain people, or when absolutely enraged, having lost everything in route C.
The other reason is due to secluding herself. In order to take over the world and bring peace, she had to send her sisters away from her. Her senses were also growing in strength with each passing day. For example, the noise of a parade made her head feel like it was splitting open, or with how her strong sense of taste has made it impossible for her to enjoy any kind of food. When her sisters do return for a reunion to repel Zero, she’s too wrapped up in her work in the library to pay them any attention beyond greeting them and asking how they are doing.
Her pride is ultimately her biggest weakness, and the primary reason it’s her sin. Due to seeing herself as the leader, she rarely budges on matters. In order to protect the humans, rather than just help set up systems so they can work with each other better, she prefers to have each Intoner dominate them because she doesn’t trust humans can watch over themselves, and even counts on the Intoner’s negative traits to help keep things under control. Despite learning that the flower inside of her is a parasite, she chooses to blame Zero and refuses to even entertain the idea of working with her, instead choosing to call Zero cursed and handling things herself; and doing a poor job in each and every route of the game. In fact, her resisting the flower’s takeover and not acting as violent as Zero makes her feel morally right in that only she can truly be the one to destroy it once and for all. Very rarely is she willing to show her vulnerable side to people, only to those most trusted, like her dragon friend, Gabriella. And even then, it takes some time, just because she is hyper-focused on eliminating Zero.
She is also constantly hard on herself when dealing with matters, and in some cases, unable to follow through. When she realizes the danger the Intoners possess and the need to kill her sisters, she allows Zero to kill each and every one of them, sparing her the pain of killing a loved one. After all, killing someone she hates is much easier, even if One has nothing but guilt over the ordeal. She tends to judge herself by laws set by the world/religion she grew up with, such as looking down at incest and committing murder. The latter she recognizes as a sin in her DLC chapter, yet constantly does so against her foes, trying to believe it’s perfectly fine if it’s to protect a loved one, in this case, her siblings. She has no qualms against killing those with black hearts however, and will do so in a blink of an eye. As for incest, in the same DLC, while she outright refused, her desires (Intoners possess a high sex drive that’s hard to ignore) ultimately led her to sleep with her brother, and she cried the entire time despite reassuring words. In fact, that’s kinda why she created her brother: to forgive herself, since no one else really would, especially as she closes herself off to others. In notes found within the game called “Memories of the Intoner,” while writing words to help guide her sisters, the last entry shows she has a lot of doubt because of her plans falling apart and her sisters going insane from the curse of the flower, and will die with such feelings when confronting Zero, regardless of who wins.
Abilities:
A lot of One’s in-canon abilities were the result of The Flower, a strange parasite that helped create One and her sisters. One of her strongest abilities is to summon giant monsters known as Daemons, which would later become known as The Watchers. Normally, an Intoner needs the aid of a Disciple to summon such a being. One however can do so easily by herself, and can even summon two at once; the novel states three but it’s not available in English. The only known Daemons she can summon are Gabriel, a dragon originally called Gabriella and a dear friend to One, and Abdiel, a golem-like monster far larger than Gabriel, and three are three of them; both are roughly the size of a large house. Due to Gabriella having a personality however and being potentially appable, I’m okay with either One being unable to summon the dragon, or even unable to summon either of them.
One's abilities center around a single power: Song. It’s one of the only ways One is able to use magic, mostly to enhance her own abilities or others. She doesn’t demonstrate a lot of variety using magic, but Utahime-Five has shown she can create a shield and even reflect projectiles. However, in that same manga, many of the magic the Intoners can use were based off of their summons, like Two able to summon a giant fist to punch down a large door. The real power of the song comes in the Intoner mode, which is a light transformation. In that state, One’s abilities are heightened, and is one of the few areas she excels over even Zero in, possessing the strongest one of all. Her speed and power are increased, and she strikes using large claw strikes. She isn’t invulnerable however; another sister using this mode or someone possessing far greater power can still cause damage.
In addition to powering up and creating shields, it can also be used to enhance others’ abilities and heal them. But in reality, while it may do these things, it can also turn the target insane, even fanatical towards an Intoner to protect them, or twist their body and soul to become more monstrous. And when the Intoner who sang the song is killed, they start to lose their sanity and sense of self, suffering a fate worse than death. It can also be used to self-destruct the user in great magical power, but it all depends on what The Flower desires. For example, if One had beaten Zero, it would have restricted One from trying to use this, or even to take them both out since it’s also working against the sisters.
One spell One can use, even without the aid of the Flower, is the use of a Pact. A Pact is forbidden magic that fuses the life-force with the user and another creature, like a spirit of death, or in One's case, a Dragon. This is done to empower both, and even save each other from a near-death state. In One's case, she was able to make a pact on Gabriella, who had gone berserk thanks to the dark power she suddenly obtained, and reverse it by forming a pact, in addition to draining all the surrounding magic in the area. As a side effect, One appeared to be briefly part dragon, sharing the curse before reversing it. A Pact however has two drawbacks. One, a price must be paid. It can be what the user values most (or something random) like their voice, hair, etc. In One's case, she sacrificed her age. And two, their lives are linked. Should Gabriella die, unless the Pact is broken, One would die as well. Due to her death at the end of Route D, Gabriel/Gabriella died, so the Pact is now undone, leaving her free to use it on another creature.
One also possesses enhanced strength and speed, enough to take on many armored soldiers in a single battle with little issue. Even in her child form from a year ago, she was able to casually hold up some of a tower from a castle when it came crashing down onto her sisters. Intoners also possess some degree of a healing factor to prevent death. The only way to nullify it, apart from complete annihilation, would be a dragon, or things made from a dragon, like weapons made from the teeth of one, the tooth itself, their fire, etc. She can still sustain injury from powerful forces, such as one enemy in the manga who pinned her to a building with a spear, so it will take some time for wounds to heal. Her body is also capable of retaining her age up to around the same year her sister Zero was, so around early 20s at max. Due to the Pact, she ended up aging down to her child form, and eventually ending up more around 14-15 and remained so after a year. Without the Pact active, she can eventually return to this more adult form. However, she can also do so after using a lot of magic in a situation where she needs more power.
All five senses are also enhanced, allowing her to hear things from great distances, or even tell something is amiss with a single glance; the latter is demonstrated when she spotted her sister Three hiding a recently acquired doll. However, these are also a detriment, with the sound bothering One enough that she tends to spend her time in a library. Then there’s her sense of taste. Despite being a good cook, water is listed as her favorite food, since if she were to eat or drink anything with even a bit more flavor, this is a chance her enhanced senses would make it overwhelming. She can suppress it when engaged in combat however thanks to coping methods. Her intellect also appears to be somewhat enhanced, given how quickly she learns and understands things, such as when she used a spear against One, despite showing no experience beforehand. However, this doesn't translate into mastering skills right away. It will still take One time to properly learn advanced skills.
